The northwest Las Vegas Valley sits at a terrain transition: irrigated suburban development giving way to rugged, undisturbed Mojave Desert terrain within a short distance. That terrain supports large, established wild Africanized bee populations that have been building colonies in natural cavities -- rock outcroppings, desert scrub, ground voids -- for years.

During spring and fall swarming seasons, scouts from these desert colonies fan out into residential Centennial Hills looking for suitable cavity spaces. Stucco construction throughout the community -- weep screeds, pipe penetrations, block fence hollow cores, attic vents -- provides exactly what those scouts are looking for. The result is consistent, high-volume swarm pressure on Centennial Hills homes from late February through May and again in September and October.

Centennial Hills borders North Las Vegas to the east, sharing similar desert exposure and construction types.
